The development of Lightstreamer began in 2000, when some business partners, initially focused on system integration activities for the Italian market, were asked by several financial institutions to deliver a reliable solution to push real-time market data through the Web.

Lightstreamer was the first solution that could deliver live data to any web browser without relying on external components (such as Java applets). In 2004 Lightstreamer was separated into an independent ISV (legal entity Weswit Srl) to provide 'push technology' to a wider global market.

Since then, Lightstreamer has been used in many mission-critical production systems, where scalability, low network impact, bandwidth management, and adaptive streaming have proven fundamental features. Lightstreamer's customer base includes top tier financial institutions around the globe.
